If you have been following along with these niche site case study updates then you should now have a site set up, the main article written and a few pages, like the about page. Your site will still be missing a home page and some other content.
In this update, I am going to discuss adding more content to your niche site. The next update will discuss creating your home page. Then that is it – you we will have finished your niche site!
After this, the rest of this niche site case study will concentrate on link building and letting you know how my own niche sites are progressing.
If you haven’t read my other niche site case study updates, you can find them all here. They will help you build your own niche site and follow the progress of my own, new niche sites.
Step 6: Write and publish 5 product review articles
The next stage is to add some more content to your site. It is great having your main buying guide (and that’s where you will direct most traffic), but your site does need more content.
I recommend starting with product reviews. They are quick and easy and link in well with the main buying guide.
First of all, you need to pick 5 items to write reviews about. I suggest picking 5 items from your main buying guide. To work out which products to review consider:
- Which products were mentioned most when you did your keyword research.
- Which products have the most reviews and highest review ratings in Amazon.
Basically, you want to review the most popular products which are quality. Ideally, you will get some Google traffic to the reviews which are why keywords matter.
Many positive reviews in Amazon is a great sign as many people will already have some idea of what they want to buy, they just want your site to confirm it’s a good choice. It’s much easier to get someone to buy something they already intended to buy than to convince them of another option.
Once you’ve chosen five products, do the following:
- Do keyword research for each of the products by entering “<product name> review” into KeySearch. I don’t usually find that many great keywords but I do try to use what I do find.
- Write a template that you can use for each of your reviews. This is basically sub headings like “features”, “pros”, “cons”, etc. Look at your competitor’s sites for ideas of what might be good sub headings in your niche.
- Get writing! Write each of the reviews. Make sure they are at least 300 words. I aim for 500-800 words each.
The reviews should be well researched. It’s a good idea to read other reviews on other sites and Amazon to see what people say about the products.
If you are short on time, this is something I would recommend outsourcing. It’s not usually hard to find someone on UpWork that can write reviews for a cheap price. They are quick to write yourself once you have completed one or two.
Once you are done, add them to your site. Add images and links from Amazon (preferably using EasyAzon to save you time and to localise the links). Link to the reviews from your buying guide.
I recommend putting all your reviews in one category. If you are using a theme which is set up for reviews then give a rating and make this visible too.
Menus
This is also a good time to consider changing your menus (or creating them). Make sure you can get everywhere from your menu. I would suggest putting your main buying guide in the menu and also think about linking to the reviews from your menu (to the category where they are placed).
I have more information about setting up menus here.
Ongoing content
It can be tempting to plan a whole lot of content for a niche site at this point. However, I would suggest investing the minimum amount of time to have a good looking, functional website until it is proven to work – as in it is ranking well in Google.
Fresh content is an indicator for Google and I would suggest creating and scheduling some but don’t go overboard. Plan for an article a month.
The articles can be more product reviews, general informational articles or anything at all really.
Our niche sites
It’s only been a week since my last update so not much has changed. There are more keywords ranking and the main keyword has gone down slightly – down to #20 for site 1 which is a great sign. We have also had a couple of more sales which is exciting!
Time and money spent on step 6
Time Spent: 1 hour per site
Money: US$25 per site
Nathan used a writer to write the reviews. If you don’t do this, then expect the time to take longer, say 3.5 hours per site, and you will not need to spend anything.
